Flower power pillow

Step by step.

I like to make two of the same pillows.

For each pillow you will need.

Background 20” x 20” white

Batting 21” x 21”

Backing 21” x 21”

FQ green for leaves and stems.

Bundle of scraps for the flowers and bugs.

Optional spray baste.

Printable Heat n Bond sheets, available from Helenjuuldesigns.dk

½ meter fabric for the back of the pillow.

2 x 20” zips

White, green and mixed colours of thread.

Pillow pads I bought mine from Ikea, INNER 50cm x x50cm (20” x 20”)

You will find a downloadable PDF file with all the flower and leaf templates at the end of the tutorial.

Prepare your quilt sandwich, I used spray base but you can just lightly pin or sew baste them.

Print or trace the flower templates on to the Heat n Bond.

I have added a page of stems and leaves you can print and use for the green stems but I prefer to use one piece of Heat n Bond and cut my stems as shown.

Continue to make and cut out your stems, leaves, flowers and insects. You can use as many flowers as you like the design is yours so have fun, no two pillows will be the same.

Lay out your leaves first, remove the backing paper and press them to the background fabric as shown, or in your design choice.

Sew them using a straight stitch along the edges and make some extra lines to define the leaves

Now take all your flower pieces and lay them out as shown or in your design choice.

Peel the paper from the back of the flower as shown and press the flower sticky side down to your desired position.

Continue in the manner until you are happy with your layout.

Sewing the flowers. I used matching threads for each flower. Sew carefully around the flowers a few times, I did three rounds. Cut the tread.

Once you have sewn the petals, add the centers of the flowers and sew them in place as before.

Next place the insect bodies or wings on the pillow randomly.Sew them in place and then add the wings or bodies and sew them in place. Adding antenna and stingers where needed.

Now you are ready to quilt the pillow.

I used a simple swirl design all around the flowers, I did not quilt on top of them apart from when I added a spider’s web for fun.

Your pillow top is now complete, trim it to 19.5” square.

Prepare the pillow back.

Cut a piece of fabric 19.5″ x 11″, and another piece 19.5” x 12”, fold and press the top 2” inward as shown.

Sew the zip to the first piece as shown below.

And the other side to the second piece as shown, it must be close to the inner part of the 2” lip

Attach a ribbon to the sip pull and leave an opening so you can turn the pillow later.

Sew twice around the edge, taking care when sewing over the zip, trim the corners and turn the pillow right sides out.

Here is the pillow pad I used in my pillows.

This month we are sewing a traditional courthouse block quilt, the quilt is 24″ x 20″ and consists of 20 blocks, 10 in a blue colourway and 10 in pink, I used reproduction civil war type fabrics, but can be made in any fabric of your own choice. The block size is 4 ” square unfinished , 3.5″” finished.

The following tutorial is an alternative to a strip pieced way of making this quilt, so it’s a little different from the pattern you’ve been sent, but some quilters like this way of sewing, so I thought I’d show it here.

Sew the blocks together as shown above, press the seams open and add your border, press.

Quilt as desired, I quilted mine using my walking foot in the ditch around the blocks then hand quilted the block around the light fabric.

Stof A baggrund.

4 stk 3,5″ firkantet

1 stk 7,25″ firkant, skæres fra hjørne til hjørne to gange for at lave 4 trekanter.

Stof C

Gentag for at lave 4 enheder.

Sy de to resterende B-enheder på hver side af stof C-firkanten.

Sew the two remaining B units to each side of the fabric C square.
